Watch that rock!

Mistakes

I had had my drivers license for over two years, but still no car. Most of the time I was stuck driving my mom's huge family van, which is sooo the vehicle in which every high school student wishes to be seen.

One day I got off work and decided to go through the Taco Bell drive through in the dreaded van. I should mention that the restaurant is on the main street of my town, and this day was the first day of an annual event that is comparable to a county fair, but it's held just off the main street. So, there were probably 10 times more people around than normal.

After I placed my order at the speaker, I pulled forward to the window where I picked up my food. Then came the sharp right turn. I thought I was navigating the van pretty well for such a tight turn, until I felt a little resistance. I pushed down on the gas thinking I had just bumped up on the curb or something. Then I went flying. It wasn't the curb I had driven over; it was a large landscaping rock, probably about a foot and a half tall. Now the running board of the van was mangled and hopelessly lodged on the rock. On the main street. During the fair. I may never know how many of my friends drove by and saw poor Manuel and Pedro trying to push the van off the rock while I was making my best attempt to hide my face from view. It took a long time before my mom lent me her wheels again. It took a long time before I got up the courage to ask!
